Sustainability in the hospitality industry is becoming an increasingly important topic, with a focus on resource conservation, waste reduction and energy efficiency. How does SEIC Hospitality contribute to sustainable development and is it realistic to expect the hospitality industry in BiH to become fully sustainable in the future? How do you envision such a business?
SEIC Hospitality recognizes the key role of sustainability in the hospitality industry and is committed to implementing environmentally responsible practices. As the owner and operator of the Residence Inn Sarajevo hotel, I am pleased to emphasize that we are continuously working to optimize resource consumption, increase energy efficiency and improve sustainable operations. We are currently in the process of certification for the Green Key, which is the leading environmental standard in the tourism industry, confirming our commitment to long-term reduction of our ecological footprint.
Our hotel implements a number of initiatives, including optimizing water and energy consumption through smart management systems, using LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances, and digitizing guest information. By participating in initiatives such as "Make a Green Choice" and "Low Plastic Zone", we encourage responsible use of resources. Our standard operations also include sorting waste into 3 categories, including reducing food waste through optimizing procurement and meal preparation.
Following modern trends in tourism, we adapt services to guest preferences, offering options for vegans and vegetarians, and promoting local culture through cooperation with local producers. Our corporate social responsibility encompasses not only taking care of guests, but also taking care of employees through various motivation and recognition programs. We encourage inclusivity and equality for all in tourism by offering accommodation units adapted for the stay and movement of people with disabilities. In addition, the pet-friendly concept of the hotel, as well as the smoking ban, also contribute to a healthier and more comfortable environment for all guests.
Sustainability in the hospitality industry is not only a trend, but also an imperative for the long-term development of the industry. SEIC Hospitality believes that the key to success is constant innovation and adaptation to best environmental practices. We plan to further improve our sustainability strategy by introducing renewable energy sources, improving waste management systems, and strengthening cooperation with local environmental initiatives. Our guests increasingly value environmentally responsible business practices, and we believe that hotels that invest in sustainable practices will have a long-term competitive advantage.
The full sustainability of the hospitality industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina depends on the synergy of all stakeholders in the industry, including hotels, guests, the local community and state institutions. Broader initiatives and support through subsidies and tax breaks are needed for hotels that invest in green technologies. SEIC Hospitality’s vision is to become an example of responsible business through innovation and continuous improvement of standards, confirming that sustainable development in the hospitality industry is not only possible, but also necessary for the future of tourism.
The lack of qualified staff is a key challenge for hotels around the world, and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is no exception. How does SEIC Hospitality deal with this challenge and what strategies do you employ to attract and retain qualified workers?
The lack of qualified labor and the workforce in general is a significant challenge for the hospitality industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina. SEIC Hospitality recognizes the importance of this problem and implements strategies aimed at educating and training employees to ensure top-notch service. We create a positive and supportive work environment that motivates our employees for professional development and long-term loyalty.
It is increasingly common for hotels to be forced to hire foreign workers to meet the needs of guests, while domestic workers are increasingly leaving abroad, especially during the high season. This problem is not only present in the hospitality industry, but also affects other sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We invest significant efforts in retaining qualified employees who have undergone training and education in accordance with our standards. So far, we have managed to maintain a low level of labor turnover, although we notice that this trend is accelerating.
SEIC Hospitality, as part of the Marriott family, implements these standards through various initiatives. We focus on creating a positive and supportive work environment, providing employees with opportunities for professional development and advancement. Through continuous education and mentoring programs, we strive to ensure that our employees have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide superior service to our guests.
We are aware that the new generation of workers has specific expectations from employers. This generation values work-life balance, opportunities for rapid career advancement, diversity in the workplace, and transparent and fast communication. In order to attract and retain talented members of the new generation, we adapt our practices to new social trends. We implement flexible work arrangements, provide clear paths for career advancement, and ensure regular feedback.
Although we are trying through individual efforts and strategies to solve this problem, we believe that a broader strategy is needed for a long-term solution to this problem. Cooperation between educational institutions, government bodies, and the private sector is key to creating a sustainable framework that will enable the development and retention of a qualified workforce in the hospitality industry.
What are the key goals of SEIC Hospitality in the next five years and how do you see the development of the hotel industry in BiH?
The number of tourists and overnight stays in Sarajevo has increased significantly in the past period, and we expect this trend to continue in the future. We were optimistic about the development of tourism and had high expectations for the upcoming season. However, global economic developments, as well as recent decisions to increase the minimum wage and electricity prices, have introduced some uncertainty into the business environment. This requires a review of our goals and adaptation to new market conditions.
Although it will take time to adjust to the changes, we remain committed to the development of the hotel industry and the improvement of the tourist offer in Sarajevo. Our commitment to providing top-notch service to all guests remains unchanged, and through strategic planning and innovation we strive to respond to challenges and ensure long-term sustainability of the business.
